Tampa Bay Downs Selections - 1/15/08

Results 8-34 (24%) -$11.80 (8-3-2)

On Sunday, Forest Fever hit the gate at the break an was out of the race at 3-5 (while being unplayable at those odds anyway). Someone laid in $1000 to win in the first two minutes of the wagering. Does she get a second chance or will the gate bring back bad memories next time out? Psychic Star disappointed, making up eight lengths in the stretch but failing to catch the leaders. Matched scratched.

On Tuesday, Renee's Regent(PP4) looks like a winner in the 5th. Leading trainer Jamie Ness and leading jockey Daniel Centeno team up for another win with Renee's Regent. The five year old mare has raced above today's par (61) in her last 10 consecutive races and takes a considerable drop in class. My file on Ness says he "moves freely from dirt to turf and vice versa" and Ness wins 44% of the time with dropdowns. What's not to like? I expect this switch hitter to change running styles today to keep the pressure on Awesome Illusion. Ashley and I (PP8) should complete the exacta. The step up from C12500 to C16 is a marginal one and there is no reason Ashley will not put up another good effort this afternoon. Angevine has an 82% ITM percentage off the claim. Seventeen Above looks OK but Ness has a score to settle with Kathy DeMasi (who claimed Seventeen Above from Ness in her last start). For that matter so do I. You'll recall I touted Stash The Boots on 1/4 and DeMasi disappointed off the claim in that race.

In the 7th, Ohio Way (PP2) figures to continue to improve off two good efforts and is clearly the horse to beat. Beware of a short price though. Alex Ingram(PP5) will be right there too.

In the 8th, Irish Son (PP2) should romp home for Dale Bennett. He is the king of the long layoff winners (57%). With $475K invested in Irish Son, he better start producing some $ soon. Working well. Velez up. All this adds up to the winner's circle to me.

Good luck and good racing!
